Threads of Lucknow

(By appointment)

Embroidery traditions of Lucknow is not unknown. This city has long been a vibrant hub for intricate needlework, gracefully adapting to modern times while preserving its rich heritage.

The art of Chikan embroidery, in particular, plays a vital role in the lives of numerous women in and around Lucknow. It not only offers them a means of earning a living and contributing to the local economy but also empowers them and ensures the continuation of this cherished craft. Men, on the other hand, lend their skilled hands to other exquisite forms of embroidery, notably Zari and Aari work. These intricate designs often come to life in small, home-based studios. It’s remarkable to witness groups of men collaborating on large wooden frames, their collective artistry transforming cloth into stunning masterpieces. What’s truly special is how this tradition has woven together the Hindu and Muslim communities in Lucknow. They coexist peacefully, their harmony fostered by a delicate economic interdependence. The Hindu Rastogi community traditionally engages in selling these embroidered garments, while Muslim artisans contribute their exceptional craftsmanship.

Imagine the opportunity to delve into this captivating world firsthand with a half-day experiential visit to a designer’s studio. You would have the chance to learn about this intricate art directly from the skilled men and women involved. Each guest would receive a personal embroidery kit for a hands-on learning experience, accompanied by a talk from a designer. To complete this cultural immersion, an authentic and delicious home-cooked Rastogi meal would be served for lunch.
