Threads of Banaras

(Silk Weaving - Varanasi)

(Every day except Friday at 1000 Hrs)
Varanasi, a city steeped in history and spirituality, is also the birthplace of the exquisite Banarasi silk saree. Renowned for their intricate designs and the use of gold and silver threads, these sarees are a cherished part of every Indian woman’s collection and a quintessential element of Indian weddings.
We invite you on an engaging three-hour walking tour led by an expert to experience the world of Banarasi silk weaving firsthand. You’ll have the opportunity to stroll through a weavers’ loom village that has been revitalized through the patronage of The Taj Group of Hotels. This initiative has brought the looms back to life, producing handcrafted silk sarees as uniforms for their women executives across India and internationally.

This walking tour offers a unique chance to delve into and appreciate this intricate craft. You’ll meet the weavers and their families, gaining direct insights into their lives and the evolution of the silk trade over time. Witness the artistry of the handlooms, understand the weaving process, and learn about the sourcing and various types of silk used. The experience also includes a visit to a weaver’s home, where you can enjoy tea and engage in a conversation, perhaps even trying your hand at working with one of the silk pieces on the loom. This immersive experience will provide a deeper understanding and appreciation for the rich heritage of Banarasi silk.
