The word “Arti” originates from the Sanskrit term ‘aratrika,’ symbolizing the removal of darkness through the waving of light in reverence. Rooted in ancient Vedic fire rituals, the Arti ceremony traditionally represents the symbolic offering of one’s entire existence to the Divine, accompanied by prayers and devotional songs.
Arti serves as an expression of various sentiments, including love, gratitude, and even desires, depending on the performer’s intention. It can signify respect towards elders, prayers to deities, and hope for homes or vehicles. Beyond bringing luck, prosperity, and blessings to those who perform it, “taking the arti” – moving one’s hands over the flame and then touching the forehead and eyes – is also believed to bestow these benefits. In Hinduism, reverence extends beyond deities to the natural world, encompassing rivers, the earth, animals, and plants, all of which can be the recipients of Arti.
Ayodhya, the city of Lord Rama, is nestled on the banks of the sacred Saryu River. Ancient scriptures like the Ramayana and the Vedas speak of the Saryu, whose name means “one that is streaming”, as a life-giving and purifying presence for the city.
Every evening, just before sunset, the Saryu Arti is performed on the riverbank. Through a special arrangement, you have the unique privilege not only to witness this ceremony but to have the day’s Arti performed specifically for your well-being, health, and prosperity. Moreover, unlike the Ganges Arti in Varanasi, where participation is limited to observation, here you will have the opportunity to perform the Saryu Arti yourself under guidance.
As an additional option, just before the Saryu Arti, you can participate in the ‘Dudh Abhishek’ of the River Saryu. This involves offering milk to the river through a special vessel while a priest recites chants to invoke good luck, health, prosperity, and peace.
