Residency Reconstructed
(Twice every day except Friday at 1030 & 1430 hrs)
Discover the fascinating history of the Lucknow Residency with our captivating 3-hour walking tour. This historic site was once the residence of the British Resident appointed by The East India Company to govern Oudh. Spanning a vast 33-acre area, the Residency functioned as a self-contained residential colony for British officers, their families, and local employees. By May 1857, this vibrant European settlement tragically came under the control of mutineers. Over the next eighty-seven days, the thriving community was devastated, resulting in the tragic loss of over 2,000 British men, women, and children within its premises.
This insightful tour will guide you through the ruins of the Residency, bringing its past to life with the aid of rare photographs, architectural blueprints, and historical maps. You will gain a deeper understanding of the significant events of 1857-58 and their specific impact on the Residency complex. This meticulously researched tour is led by an expert on the Indian Mutiny, who will enrich your understanding through insightful commentary, texts, images, and maps. As a special addition, you will have the option of a complimentary visit to the Tornos Studio which houses an extensive and exceptional collection of books and literature on the Indian Mutiny.
