Curated Dining at Sheesh Mahal

(Tornos’ Home Dining Experience – by appointment)

The Sheesh Mahal, the palace complex of Nawab Asaf-ud-Daula, may appear altered due to unfortunate demolition after the failed mutiny of 1857, and unmindful constructions thereafter. However, it remains home to the descendants of the former royal family, who have resided there in challenging circumstances since.

Despite financial constraints, the essence of royalty and its traditions persist. Generations-old recipes are still integral to the daily meals at Sheesh Mahal, with the family upholding their authenticity. Modern times have influenced the service style, which is now less elaborate, and the number of dishes served is fewer compared to the era of Asaf-ud-Daula

Intermarriages with the royal families of the Nizams of Hyderabad and the Nawabs of Rampur have enriched the family’s culinary repertoire, introducing numerous dishes while preserving the distinctiveness of their Awadhi cuisine. A typical meal at Sheesh Mahal features Kebabs, Kormas, Pulaos, Rumali Roti, Sheermal, and Phirni. Prepared by their ancestral family cooks and the women of the household, each meal celebrates cherished family recipes passed down through the generations living there.
