Colourful Dhobi Ghat

Washermen colouring the banks of River Gomti

“They spend their lives trying to break a huge rock with a flimsy piece of cloth”

– this poignant statement truly reflects the dedication of the Indian washerman. Their rhythmic beating of clothes against the rocks along the riverbanks is a crucial step in the journey of your garments, especially the exquisite traditional Chikan embroidered pieces, from the artisan’s hands to your wardrobe. We rarely pause to consider the sheer effort and skill these individuals invest to ensure we look our best.

We invite you to witness the final, vibrant stage in the life of these colourful Chikan embroidered creations. Join us on a visit to the ghats of the Gomti River, where, after countless hours of meticulous hand embroidery by master craftsmen, these garments undergo their final wash, starching, and ironing before making their way to the emporia. This last cleansing is essential after the garments have been handled for days and months during the intricate embroidery process.

Each morning, the washermen receive these bundles of artistry from the manufacturers and bring them to the river. The scene that unfolds is captivating: the rhythmic thud of fabric against stone, the almost artistic spray of water, and the vibrant array of colourful garments hung out to dry under the sun. The entire riverbank transforms into a breathtaking canvas of hues and bustling activity.

To enhance this unique experience, we invite you to enjoy a refreshing chilled Lassi or Thandai served in traditional earthen cups, known as ‘kullhad’. Take the opportunity to converse with the washer-men, learn about their community, or simply stroll along the ghats, admiring the intricate embroidery on the hundreds of garments swaying gently in the breeze. You can even relax on a traditional jute cot, a ‘charpoy,’ and listen to the soulful folk songs called ‘Dhobiya’ sung by the washer-men themselves.

This is more than just laundry; it’s a living tradition, a testament to human effort, and a vibrant spectacle of colour and sound. Witness this fascinating aspect of Lucknow’s cultural heritage.
