Bone Crafting
(Every day except Friday and a few festivals)
Bone carving originated in early civilisations with the creation of bone tools, this art form evolved to include decorative and utilitarian pieces, often imbued with artistic touches. Sadly, this intricate craft is now facing near extinction, with only a handful of artisans persevering despite the challenges of low earnings, lack of patronage, scarcity of raw materials, and legal restrictions.
In Lucknow, a city historically known for its innovative artisans and the patronage of the Nawabs of Awadh, a few families remain dedicated to this inherited tradition. While bone carving was practiced across India, Lucknow is notable for its intricate work and the unique use of buffalo bones, sourced from local butchers and traditionally processed by the artisans. These skilled individuals transform what would otherwise be waste into beautiful masterpieces, ranging from jewelry boxes and pens to hair clips and fashion jewelry like necklaces and earrings.
Recognising that this unique art form is on the verge of disappearing, Tornos offers an opportunity to witness and support this heritage. We invite you to visit a home-based workshop where an entire family is involved in the craft. During your visit, you will have the chance to understand the intricate process, observe the artisans at work, and interact directly with them to truly appreciate their skill. Of course, there will also be an opportunity to purchase these unique creations directly from the source.
