Aminabad Shophistory Walk

(Every day except Thursday at 1530 Hrs)

In 1759, Nawab Asif-ud-Daula granted the area of Aminabad to Emperor Shah Alam-II. During his time, Shah Alam constructed an Imambara, a Feelkhana (Elephant House), a garden, and a series of shops. After his passing, his wife sold the entire property to Imdad Hussain Khan Amin-ud-Daula, who expanded the area further. It was during his tenure that the market began to flourish and came to be known as Aminabad.

Following the Indian Mutiny of 1857, the British took control of the area. In 1905, Lieutenant Governor Sir J.D. Latouche visited Aminabad and initiated a major renovation. As part of this transformation, the now-famous Latouche Road was built to connect the market, and the upgraded Aminabad was officially inaugurated by Sir Latouche in 1911.

Today, Aminabad is a dynamic blend of markets, homes, and offices — often likened to Delhi’s bustling Chandni Chowk. On our afternoon walking tour, we guide you through some of its most iconic and lively bazaars.

You’ll visit the Refugee Market, established by traders who migrated during the Partition and who continue to preserve that legacy. You’ll also explore Swadeshi Market, where merchants once stopped selling foreign goods in response to Mahatma Gandhi’s call for economic self-reliance. And don’t miss Garbar-Jhaala — famous for its lively bargaining culture, where skilled negotiators can slash prices by up to 200%!

At Tornos, we don’t just show you the sights — we help you interact with local shoppers, understand the rhythm of daily life, and soak in the rich historical layers embedded in every alley and storefront. Aminabad is more than a market — it’s a living museum of culture, commerce, and community.
